The past year has been very difficult for us. Debi has several chronic illnesses including Mitochondrial Myopathy. She started to have severe weakness about 16 years ago. She was diagnosed about 10 years ago. She has had her ups and downs over the years, but nothing like last year. In Mitochondrial disease, the body can’t burn food properly. This results in an energy crisis in the body. It can effect any part of the body at any time, so the effects change drastically at any moment. Muscles, nerves and the brain require lots of energy to function so those are effected the most.

I can’t even begin to describe all the different things that have happened to Debi’s body as a result. This has been a huge learning experience for us as well as her doctors. Mitochondrial disease is so unknown that her doctors didn’t even realize it was the mitochondrial disease causing these problems until recently. We started keeping very detailed records of everything that was happening, slowly we started finding patterns of what helped and what made it worse. Eventually things started falling into place. We found that what we were experiencing is consistent with what researchers are finding out about mitochondrial disease. There is no consistent treatment for mitochondrial disease, but we can manage it better now that we know.

At first, I couldn’t leave her alone because we never knew when she was going to run out of energy and pass out or start having seizures. I had to leave my computer consulting business so I could stay with her at the store. As her illness worsened, she couldn’t make it into the store regularly. We hired a private caregiver to stay with her so I could manage the store and run the business. But her disease continued to progress. Soon the illness was so complex that I was spending all of my time coordinating care between several doctors and medical care agencies. We had to close our store. We shut down large sections of our website. Orders dwindled. We lost everything.

We carefully considered our online business. We can keep costs down by not maintaining an inventory. Our main supplier has a very large warehouse system and fills orders quickly. We are automating both order processing and product availability with our suppliers. Because of these changes we can now offer a much larger selection of items and still maintain a large discount. We are migrating from a discount retailer to a wholesale purchasing agent.

We now have a new mission. We will use the profits from DCBcrafts to fund programs to help other people fighting and struggling with chronic illness. Debi and I have setup a blog at caringroadtrip.com where we share our experiences living with chronic illness. We do not know what the future holds for Debi, but we do know that God is carrying us through it. We have hope that we can stabilize and improve her condition. She looks forward to being able to interact with our customers and the new friends she is meeting through caringroadtrip.com. At DCBcrafts.com we will continue to offer low prices. This new automation will help us provide unprecedented service. Through the non-profit we are setting up, each purchase you make will help overcome the devastating effects of chronic illness.

With that in mind we decided to press forward. I have been working on automating our product management and order processing. Our website now automatically tracks product availability from our suppliers. We will no longer display products that are no longer available and can provide better status on items that are back-ordered or out-of-stock.
